Temptation

I know it sounds parinoid but I swear the local bakery vents new
pastery smell just to boost sales. On the right day from my front yard
you smell the variuos confections as clear as standing in the lobby.

Of Ice And Men

Ice and frozen pipes continue to be a hugh issue as tempatures
continue to plummet and snow continues to fall.
You can see the gutter here has failed causing ice to form. Picture
this on thousands on homes causing water to back up under the
shingles. But worse are the number of water losses due to burst pipes
from the fridged temps.

Built in Shelves

This weekend (Sunday really) I dug into the project I have wanted to do for a while.

I am replacing the closet door in the guest bedroom with “built in” shelves. As you can see the shelves themselves will look flush when I am done, like a built in unit, but open up to show the hidden closet. It was actually quite a bit of math to get it just right and I have quite a bit of trimming out yet to do, complete with a hidden latch mechanism that only exists right now as some vague ideas in my head.

Once done I will post a photo, this is the kind of fun project I like to do.

Irony

One definition of irony is:

“Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occur”

Today I define irony as going to an insurance continuing education class for claims handling and upon leaving getting rear ended by a 20 year old kid with no insurance.

Seriously, I can’t make this shit up.

One definition of satisfaction is:
"an act of satisfying; fulfillment; gratification"

Today satisfaction was having a big truck with a trailer hitch than punctured his car like a can opener leaving my truck unscathed. It may not always be PC, but I do love my truck. He did not even knock all the snow of my license plate.

Cool Gear - Honda Fury

Sure I am going to be in SoCal in three weeks. (by I, I mean WE right sweetie).

But that does not stop me from being tired of winter and dreaming of spring. I mean 42 inches (so far) of snow has about done me in for the season.

So leave it to Honda to come out with a new retro-looking motorcycle that makes my heart soar and my wallet weep: The 2010 Honda Fury.

Sure I need a bike like I need another hole in the head, but damn I looks so good I might have to find the money somewhere.

Cool Gear - iPhone apps : quad cam

I am always on the look out for a good apps for the iPhone but rarely do I run into one I like so much I have to comment on it.

I have had this for 5 min and I love it. It turns the iPhone camera into a "burst" camera. Its simple, its awesome and I think it will change the way I take photos.

Like Father...

Recently I was going through some old photos, looking for some of an old friend who is getting married. I have know him for most of my life so these photos span back to when I was a child and in doing so I unexpectedly ran a across these two photos.

They were taken years apart, one of me and one of my late father.

Both were taken at the same place: the family cabin.

The photo of me (I remember the day) was years ago, I was just a kid. The other one I have to take a guess at was closer to 40 years ago. Honestly I am not sure when. The cabinets had been changed slightly at some point along the way but it could not be more eerily similar.

Because my father passed before his time and because I often wonder how things might be different if he would have been around and how much would be have been alike it is some weird comfort to think these photos give me a clue. The answer is in the photo… we would be similar and yet completely opposite.

Natures Great Hall

Walking in the woods today Tanner and I came across this snow trimmed hallway.

Heavy Snow

Swept in bringing tons of fun for Tanner as we walk through the woods
near the river. After this 3-4 more inches fell making walking
difficult. Not to mention driving hazardous.

Cool Gear - Pocket Grappling Hook

Ummm... I must have this, thanks uncrate for this one.

Pocket Grappling Hook

Originally designed to handle detonation and trip wires, and straight out of any Batman-wannabe's dream, this Pocket Grappling Hook ($27) is perfect for any mission. The 1"x5.5" water resistant shell holds the hook's spikes when you're on the move, and can be filled with water or sand to add weight for more accurate throws. Forget all that "not certified for life support" stuff — they've been tested at more than 350 lbs., which should be enough to hold all but the biggest of crime-fighters. [Thanks, Paul]

$27 Buy

Worst. Idea. Ever.

The worst idea ever is this "hands free" headset.

I.Hate.Plumbing.

I don’t mean to brag but I am better than average around the house at doing minor repairs. But plumbing, well plumbing is the sort of hell Satan keeps for really really bad people.

All I wanted to do is replace a faulty and archaic water filtration system under the kitchen sink. It was all but abandoned and I was tired of having a faulty setup and my significant other was tired of the Brita on-the-faucet filter so I bought a under the sink system and Saturday with a couple of hours I took on the task.

Honestly, the system went in like clockwork. It was awesome, and with the new push on connectors it makes anyone a plumber. As usual it’s the joining of the old and the new that is the problem. Once I was done I noticed the trap was leaking. When I touched the drain the old metal pipe disintegrated in my hand. This started a 3 hour fiasco that ended with me rigging the old into the new in a way that would make Davy Jones roll over in his watery grave.

I will not go into details but suffice it to say it no longer leaks and my water is filtered.
Of course a one hour project turned into 4 hour one and I was frustrated and so was she taking away from our plans for the weekend I.Hate.Plumbing.
