EDC: Every Day Carry

EDC is a term I hear a lot from Police and Firemen that I ofter associate with the gun or knife they carry "Every Day"

But really we all have a small list of items that we carry that this site showcases just that: what people carry... every day.

In their own words:
Everyday Carry, or EDC, generally refers to small items or gadgets worn, carried, or made available in pockets, holsters, or bags on a daily basis to manage common tasks or for use in unexpected situations or emergencies. In a broader sense, it is a lifestyle, discipline, or philosophy of preparedness.

Its fun to see what others carry and its given me some ideas on how I might change what I carry... every day.

Enjoy  it *here* or cut/ paste this in to your browser of choice.

OH and don't forget to check out the archive.

Cool Gear: Acer Iconia-6120 14-Inch Dual-Screen Touchbook

Recently I have been lusting after some new tech and I have been following all the new Honeycomb tablets with great enthusiasm.
The Girl is not as enthused.

“What do you need it for?” She asked

“ I don’t need it I just want it.’ Was my best answer.

The more I think about it the more I realize she is right. What would I use it for? I mean the computer is my comfort zone. What do I need a tablet for.. running apps? Maybe what need is a new computer. A fabulous new laptop, something like the Acer Iconia-6120 14-Inch Dual-Screen Touchbook. Its not perfect, and the batter life leaves something to be desired. Yet… its awesome.

You can read more about it *here*.

For now its just a thought but I fear if I don’t get something I will fall into a tech coma.

Some rumors you just *hope* are true

From Gizmodo:

Bin Laden Killing Team May Have Used Night Vision Contact Lenses

Jesus Diaz — Christian at Military.com's Kit Up! has heard an interesting rumor on one of the technologies that Seal Team 6 used to kill Osama bin Laden: Night vision contact lenses! Holy pants, Batman.

I heard a rumor that the Team guys who busted bin Laden might have been wearing "cat vision" contact lenses that literally give the wearer night vision for a limited time without having to wear the bulky, heavy NVGs.

Cool Gear: Living with Square

What is Square? It’s a solution to a problem I didn’t know I had. What it really is is a mini credit card reader that you hook up with the * free * software and once you jump though some hoops viola! You have your own personal credit card machine for your smart phone or tablet.

Check it out *here*  or find it in any app store (at least Android or ios ) but here is two things that amaze me:

1) Everyone that sees it thinks its cool.
2) No one has heard of it

So what do I do with it? So far I don’t know. I could see it would be a killer app for a small business. Or a garage sale. For now it’s just cool that I can take credit card  payments, and I have used it… for some people that owed me money. Some reimbursements for lunch, materials I purchased and more.

Still, it is largely a solution to a problem I did not know I even had.

A cool solution at that.

Cool Gear: The Hover Bike

Mark this day.
This is the day when cool gear has reached its pantheon.
What you see here is the hover bike. You can read more about it *here* but really this is all you need to know.
I want one. I want one. I want one.
When I saw it I… I wanted one. Later I thought about it I wanted it more. Much later I was still thinking about it… I wanted it more.
I goes over 170 mph, 10,000 feet and screams awesome.  Sure the Girl thinks I’m nuts but lets face it, I am. Hell I even kind of like the way she doesn’t even sugar coat it. The Hover bike is awesome. Sure its not out yet, but it will be. If not I will just make one. I am not kidding, I will have one.
Is this the future of travel? Maybe. I will I have one? Definitely.
PS: I thought about it some more: I want one.

Cool gear: Planetary for iPad

For all the saber rattling between Apple and Android there is no doubt, at least in my mind, that Apple is leaps and bounds ahead of its open counterpart in the app department.
Planetary is one of those apps that just cements my point.
Its just a music player. That's it. Just a music player that is so uniquely executed that it is just a joy to use.
Just a music player like no other. One that just blew my mind. If you have an iPad check it out. It free in the iTunes store. You wont be disappointed. Click *here* for a review.

Cool gear- bolefloor hardwood floors. Life is not a straight line.

If you like wood floors you might just love bolefloor's more natural take on the tradtional favorite.
Check the product out *here*.
Just don't get mad if you fall in love only to find that the product is not quite available yet (summer of 2011). Likely out of my price range anyway as craftsman ship like this cant be cheap. Still a guy can dream right?

Cool Gear : Tablet issues.

Just when I thought I was in love with the 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tablet  HTC just dropped a worthy competitor in the HTC Evo tablet that is about to appear in stores any second. Its running Android 2.3 (to be upgraded to Honeycomb) with a Sense skin.

Its small enough to hold in one hand an large enough to be a productive tablet and it feels like productivity on the run to me. Best if all its full of Android goodness. The thing that I like the most is that the interface feels like the future where more and more the iOS feels like yesterdays operating system.

Not sure what I am going to do...I am contract-less right now. I am in need of a phone upgrade and I am in love with these smaller form tablets that are trickling out.

Its going to be an interesting summer.

Cool Gear: Kyocera Echo

You might find yourself flip-flopping between all the Android goodness out their and the latest iPhone 4 (soon to be 5) as I have... but before you do you might just want to check out this dual screen hotness from kyocera.

Check out the demo *here* or cut an paste this into your browser: http://www.echobykyocera.com/.

I could go on about it but I will let you discover its dual screen goodness for your self.

Is it going to add to the already surfacing "fragmentation" issues with special android apps? Probably. Is it worth going back to Sprint? Maybe.

Did it just make my decision that much harder? You betcha!

Cool App: Xfinity TV

Holy crap Batman ...
is there anything that cant be done in an iPad app?

If you have Comcast and an iPad you might want to sit down right now.
Take a deep breath. OK now continue.

I heard about this app before, and I downloaded it but I really did get it to work right. So I left it alone.
A friend of mine was talking about it the other day and I noticed it was mentioned on Comcast itself so I upgraded the app and re-configured.

Holy Crap- Xfinity auto-magically transforms your iPad into a giant, graphic. sorting, previewing, recording, big bad beautiful remote.

It sends a signal, over the interweb to your freaking cable b0x(s) to change channels, record TV and more.

I cant stress enough how freaking cool this is.

This is something for a free app. So I suggest if you have Comcast, and and iPad go get it and enjoy. I am going to go play with it now.

Cool Gear: FIlson Tin Cloth Packer Coat

Somethings are so awesome that they almost defy description.

This is the case with Filson Tin Cloth Packer Coat.

With fall around the corner this jacket will keep you warm and Filson quality will mean this jacket will be around for years.

I have to be honest: I have a pair of Filson hunting pants and a hat and these two things I count on my very short list of prized possessions.

In a world of disposable items the quality of Filson is a refreshing breath of fresh air.

If you are interested you can find it *Here*.

Cool Gear: Hops Holster

Starting today I am taking a couple of days off. I was, however, in the the office this morning to wrap up a few things... and I ran across the perfect vacation accessory: The Hops Holster.

12 - 12 ounce cans of goodness strapped to your chest Rambo style... awesome.

I might just have to get one of these for the late season fishing trip we have planned.

Check it out *here*

Cool gear: Mas Guapo

Lately Uncrate has been on a condiment kick but MAS GUAPO (roughly translated to "More Handsome" looks to be an awesome addition to anyone's spice cabinet.

Described as: "...a spice blend that falls somewhere between a dry rub and seasoning salt..." it has bold rhetoric right on the label including:

Organic
Kosher
Bitchen

and

For a more handsome chef. I give it points for the cool mustache guy alone.

With assertions like that, I might just have to give it a try. Looks like you can get it *here*
for around $10

Latest guilty addiction: Angry Birds iPhone app

Sure Apple is becoming progressively more and more evil.

Sure I am contributing to the problem by buying new apps.

But as .99 cents ... I cant help myself.

Cool Gear- Sync Envy

I thought the Sync in truck was the bees knees and really it is.
I have to say, however, that I had a little streak of envy over my friend Ron's new fusion hybrid.

Although it was a little weird driving the thing, kind of like a luxury golf-cart when as it ran silent in electric mode.... but that screen... DAMN.

In the end I would never trade him as they are entirely different vehicles and I do like me that truck, its the best one I have ever driven and I have driven a lot of nice trucks before. But that screen... DAMN... me likey.

Cool gear: Ferrari 599 GTO

Since I will be in the market for a new vehicle soon, I thought I would check out my options.

The Ferrari 599 GTO is on top of my list.

Sure its impractical, and costs more than well... more than I can currently justify. (by justify I mean even come up with without knocking over a couple 100 banks). Still, if we are looking at all the options, well we might as well look at the best case scenario.

The total production run is: 599 so get your wallets out now if you want one.
Find it *here*
